The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has revealed plans by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council to enact laws allowing the seizure and reclamation of all abandoned illegal mining sites within the region. This move is part of the council’s efforts to restore lands damaged by illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey.”
Addressing a grand durbar at Akyem Kwabeng, held in celebration of the 25th anniversary of his reign, the Okyenhene issued a stern warning to landlords, families, and farmers who have sold their lands to illegal miners.
He stated that once reclamation of these lands is completed, the original owners risk losing their rights to the traditional council if they have allowed the lands to be destroyed and abandoned.
He expressed grave concern over the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, particularly the destruction of farmlands and water bodies. He also appealed to the youth of the region to desist from engaging in illegal mining activities, urging them to protect the environment for future generations.
“We will no longer tolerate the destruction of our lands and water bodies. Anyone who has sold land for illegal mining and allowed it to be abandoned should be ready to forfeit it to the Traditional Council once it is reclaimed,” he stated.
In support of the Okyenhene’s message, the Chief of Akyem Kwabeng, Dasebre Ayimadu Kantamanto II, Gyaasehene of Akyem Abuakwa, outlined ongoing efforts by traditional leaders to curb illegal mining. He emphasized their determination to preserve the Birim River and protect the local environment from further harm.
Dasebre Ayimadu also commended the Okyenhene for his visionary leadership, praising his efforts to foster development in Akyem Abuakwa. Among the notable achievements under his leadership are the construction of 10 model schools across the region, which have now been officially commissioned.
As the Okyenhene approaches the grand climax of his 25th-anniversary celebrations next month, he has already visited all the divisional areas within Akyem Abuakwa as part of his anniversary tour.
The Okyenhene’s bold stance on illegal mining reflects his commitment to preserving the region’s natural resources and ensuring sustainable development for Akyem Abuakwa.
