Former members of Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten’s movement for change Alliance led Nana Prempeh Assembly member for Nhyiaso electoral area have condemned their ex-leader for his recent criticisms of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
The group expressed their displeasure during a press conference, characterizing Kyerematen’s comments as ungrateful and disrespectful to a statesman they credit for shaping his political career.
The backlash follows Kyerematen’s comments made during an interview with Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV, where he appeared to criticize Kufuor after the former president publicly endorsed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer for the December 2024 elections.
Criticism of Kyerematen’s Alleged Ingratitude
In their statement, the former Movement for Change members underscored the pivotal role Kufuor played in Kyerematen’s rise in Ghanaian politics.
“Mr. Kyerematen’s ascent to political prominence was made possible by President Kufuor’s magnanimity,” they said. “It is, therefore, an act of ingratitude for him to resort to personal attacks on a man who greatly contributed to his career.”
The group stressed that gratitude is a deeply valued cultural norm in Ghana and accused Kyerematen of demonstrating selfishness and greed in his response to Kufuor’s endorsement of Bawumia.
Concerns Over Timing and Political Allegiances
The group also questioned the timing of Kyerematen’s criticisms, drawing a link to recent remarks by NDC member Dela Edem, who also criticized Kufuor.
“We find it troubling that Alan’s attacks come only days after the NDC’s Dela Edem launched an assault on the former president’s character,” they stated. “This coincidence suggests Alan may be aligning himself with the NDC’s agenda, raising questions about his true loyalties.”
Warning from Asanteman
The former members emphasized Kufuor’s standing within Asanteman and Ghana, cautioning Kyerematen against alienating the region’s people.
“Former President Kufuor is a revered figure in Asanteman and beyond. Alan Kyerematen must tread carefully to avoid incurring the wrath of Asanteman,” they warned.
Calls for Restraint
The group urged Kyerematen to focus on rebuilding his reputation rather than engaging in what they described as unnecessary attacks and character assassination.
“We urge Mr. Kyerematen to concentrate on reviving his diminished political glory instead of attacking prominent figures like Kufuor,” they concluded.
Acknowledgement of Bawumia’s Leadership
The former members expressed their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, citing his track record and vision for Ghana’s economic growth. They endorsed former President Kufuor’s assertion that Bawumia is the right leader to steer the country toward prosperity.
The group ended by reaffirming their commitment to protecting their beliefs and warned against attempts to silence them.
