Residents in parts of the Sissala East Municipality of the Upper West Region are raising alarm over reports of multiple unexplained deaths, with about 20 fatalities allegedly recorded in several communities in recent days and weeks.
The reported deaths, according to Ghana Conflict Monitor, are said to have occurred mainly among young Fulani people, are said to have been recorded in Nabugubelle, Sumboru, Yigantu, Navrowie and Sakalu.
Preliminary accounts indicate that some of those affected developed severe headaches and subsequently experienced bleeding from the nose, mouth and anus before their deaths.
However, the cause of the deaths has not been established, and the reported number of fatalities has not been independently verified.
At least one suspected case from Nabugubelle is reportedly receiving treatment at the Tumu Municipal Hospital.
The reports have raised concerns about a possible public health threat in the affected communities, although there is currently no official confirmation that the deaths are linked to a common disease or infectious outbreak.
Health authorities are expected to establish the number and locations of the reported deaths, identify any additional suspected cases and determine whether the affected persons had common clinical or epidemiological links.
Laboratory investigations would also be required to establish the cause of the illness and determine whether there is any risk of transmission within the affected communities.
The reports come against the background of previous meningitis surveillance in the Upper West Region. However, available regional health data do not establish a link between the current reports and meningitis.
Residents have been urged to report people showing unusual symptoms to health facilities and to follow instructions from health authorities.
Until investigations are completed, the reported deaths, symptoms and estimated toll should be treated as preliminary information rather than confirmation of an outbreak.
