The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled Nana Amofa Twumasi II, the chief of Mpasaaso No.2 in the Ashanti Region, over multiple allegations, including his involvement in illegal mining.
The chief, who ruled for 41 years, was found guilty after appearing before the Asanteman Kumasi Traditional Council at the Manhyia Palace. Among the accusations leveled against him were his alleged questionable royal lineage and failure to provide proper oversight and accountability to his community and traditional authorities.
The primary reason for his removal was his role in illegal mining activities in the Mpasaaso community, which has led to severe environmental damage, particularly the destruction of water bodies.

The Asantehene strongly condemned the chief’s actions, stressing that traditional leaders must uphold customary values, enforce the law, and protect the land from degradation.
The Manhyia Palace has recently taken firm action against several chiefs implicated in illegal mining, reinforcing Otumfuo’s commitment to preserving the environment and upholding the integrity of traditional leadership.
