Asawase MP Muntaka Mubarak files nomination for 7th term

Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region, has officially filed his nomination to contest for a seventh term as the constituency’s representative in Parliament.

Hundreds of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters gathered at the Aboabo Post Office to accompany the former Minister for Youth and Sports, celebrating with songs and dances to the campaign tunes of the NDC flag bearer.

The supporters marched through the principal streets of the constituency, leading to the Asokore-Mampong municipal office of the Electoral Commission.

Speaking to the media after filing his nomination, Muntaka expressed gratitude to the constituents for their continuous trust in him to represent them in Parliament for over 20 years on the NDC ticket.

He recalled the long-standing support from his constituents, even during the presidency of John Agyekum Kufuor, when the Asawase parliamentary seat was nicknamed the “Golden Seat” in the hope of the NPP winning it.

“With the support of the electorate who believe in me, we fought hard to block the NPP, despite their attempts to buy votes by pumping money into the elections. In 2020, they made a lot of noise about winning the seat, but to their disappointment, the NDC in Asawase handed them the worst defeat ever. I am grateful to the people for their massive show of support,” he said.

Muntaka emphasized that the people of Asawase are well aware of his contributions to both Parliament and the development of the constituency.

“I have always told my constituents to trust me for excellent leadership. Their concerns are my concerns. The challenges of our community are well-known, and by the grace of God, anyone who knew this constituency 20 years ago knows that a lot of changes have happened. However, we hope to resolve the remaining challenges,” he stated.

He also highlighted the progress made in Asawase under his leadership, noting that the constituency used to lag behind in many areas of Greater Kumasi, but that narrative has changed.

“Our road networks are almost 85% complete, but since the NPP came into power, they have refused to continue other projects initiated by the NDC government. About 90% of our street lights were working, but now less than 5% are functional. The drainage project we started at Sepe has been abandoned and is now deteriorating. I don’t think the people of Asawase will reward the NPP with their votes, considering their poor performance in the constituency.”

In the area of education, Muntaka recalled, “When I became the MP for Asawase 20 years ago, there was only one senior high school in the constituency.

Today, we have six, thanks to God and the NDC. Most of our schools were wooden structures, but now, all of them are 100% proper buildings. My people know what we have achieved together, so I’m not afraid of anyone contesting me in this election because Asawase people trust me,” he reiterated.

He urged party supporters to increase the number of votes in both the presidential and parliamentary elections, building on the success of the 2020 election.
