The Ashanti Regional branch of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering on the manifesto promises that propelled the party to victory in the 2024 general elections.
As part of activities marking the government’s first anniversary in office, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, Augustus Andrew Nana Kwasi, expressed deep appreciation to Asanteman for the significant support the region extended to the party during the elections.
While acknowledging the vital role of the party’s grassroots in securing the NDC’s electoral gains, he assured supporters that the government, in collaboration with party leadership, is working diligently to meet their expectations.
Ghanaians went to the polls on December 7, 2024, electing John Dramani Mahama as President of the Republic.
Ashanti Region’s Historic Contribution
The Ashanti Region traditionally known for voting overwhelmingly for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) delivered an unexpected boost to the NDC, giving the party approximately 34% of the presidential votes.
The region also increased the NDC’s parliamentary seats from four to seven, a development that stunned many political observers.
Addressing the media in Kumasi, Nana Kwasi commended campaign coordinators, regional executives, and party supporters for their effective and strategic campaign efforts.
“As the chairman and leader of the party in the Ashanti Region, it is my responsibility to show appreciation to the good people of the region for the massive support you gave the NDC before and during the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. I want to especially thank the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the clergy, chiefs, imams, the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee, campaign coordinators, the grassroots, and everyone who believed in the NDC agenda,” he said.
He further assured the region that the party remains committed to fulfilling its campaign promises.
“As leader of the party in the Ashanti Region, I owe you the responsibility of ensuring that the promises we made to the people of Asanteman are achieved. As a party, we will work hand in hand with the government to fulfill those promises,” he added.
Appeal for Patience Among Supporters
Nana Kwasi also acknowledged the dedication of the party’s grassroots during the 2024 electioneering period. He urged supporters who have not yet received appointments to remain patient and continue supporting the government.
“There is a lot of pressure on me. This is the first time the Ashanti Region has delivered 34% of the votes and elected seven MPs in an NPP-dominated region. Everybody is demanding recognition through appointments and other opportunities. But it is obvious that the President cannot meet every expectation,” he noted.
He commended President Mahama for giving the region “deserving appointments,” even as he called for more representation.
“I urge branch chairmen and others yet to receive appointments to remain calm and support the government’s Reset Agenda to enable it achieve its objectives,” he pleaded.
He also encouraged government appointees from the region not to neglect the party’s grassroots.
“We all campaigned, and some of you have been appointed. It is your responsibility to support those who did not get appointments so they remain committed to the party’s development efforts,” he advised.
Ashanti NDC MPs Pledge to Champion Regional Development
Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Yakubu Mohammed—speaking on behalf of Ashanti Region’s seven NDC MPs—described their representation in Parliament as a privilege.
He pledged their collective commitment to championing the developmental agenda of Asanteman.
“It is a privilege that the region has given us, the seven NDC MPs, to represent our constituencies in Parliament. We want to assure the party and the public that we will do everything within our power to support the government’s agenda to ensure Ashanti gets its fair share of the national cake. Our MPs, including Hon. Muntaka Mohammed and Hon. Bawa Mohammed, are working hard to promote the welfare of the party in the region,” he said.
MMDCEs Promise Support for Government Agenda
Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region also pledged their unwavering support to ensure the successful execution of the government’s development agenda.
“As implementers of the government’s agenda at the grassroots, we want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to make the government proud. We will give all the needed support to our MPs to ensure constituencies are properly managed while they conduct government business in Parliament,” an MMDCE spokesperson added.
