The Ashanti Regional NPP Caucus in Parliament has strongly condemned the disruption of the Council of State elections in the region.
The NPP group labeled it as an attack on democracy and calling for immediate action against those responsible.
Addressing a press conference in Parliament, the MP for Asante Mampong, Kwabena Amprah Twum, described the incident as an “outrageous act of lawlessness” orchestrated by alleged NDC thugs, led by one Awal Forty, rumored to be a nominee for the municipal chief executive position for Asokore Mampong.
According to the caucus, the assailants stormed the counting process at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, seized a ballot box, and attempted to disrupt the electoral process. The MP condemned the act, warning that the Ashanti Region will not tolerate intimidation or lawlessness that threatens the country’s democratic values.
“The Ashanti Region has always been a stronghold of democracy and good governance in Ghana,” Hon. Amprah Twum stated. “We will not allow the reckless and lawless behavior of a few individuals to tarnish our democratic credentials.”
He urged civil society organizations, traditional leaders, religious bodies, and the media to speak up against what he termed as an attack on democracy and to demand accountability from the authorities.
“We refuse to be silent, we refuse to be intimidated. Democracy must prevail,” he emphasized.
The caucus warned that any attempts to use violence and fear to undermine elections in the region would be fiercely resisted, calling on security agencies to swiftly investigate and prosecute those involved in the disruption.
Meanwhile, Ghana Police Service are yet to comment on any potential investigations into the incident.
