Amid escalating tensions in Tontokrom, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has refuted claims circulating on social media that he promised the withdrawal of military and police personnel from the Asanko Mining concession in the Amansie South District.
Dr. Amoakohene has firmly denied allegations that he assured residents of Tontokrom that security forces stationed at the Asanko Mines site would be withdrawn.
His response follows the circulation of a viral video in which a youth leader from the community alleged the Minister made such a promise during a recent engagement.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Amoakohene described the claim as false and misleading, warning the public against spreading unverified information that could inflame tensions.
He stressed that the presence of security forces is necessary to ensure peace and order in the area.
“There is no directive to withdraw the military or police. We need them to maintain peace and protect lives and property while we work on resolving the issue,” he stated.
The Minister called on the youth to remain calm and allow the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to engage all stakeholders involved in the dispute.
He acknowledged the growing unrest in Tontokrom, which has seen a series of confrontations between community members and military personnel at the mining concession.
In an effort to de-escalate the situation, Dr. Amoakohene announced plans for a stakeholder meeting involving the Regional Coordinating Council and officials of Asanko Mines. The meeting aims to gather all perspectives and seek a long-term resolution to the ongoing conflict.
He also revealed that the Minerals Commission will be consulted to verify the legitimacy of Asanko Mines’ operations.
“If it is confirmed that the concession indeed belongs to Asanko Mines, there will be very little the government can do in terms of reclaiming the land for the youth,” he explained.
Nonetheless, he said the government will urge the company to provide alternative livelihood support or employment opportunities for affected youth in the area.
Dr. Amoakohene reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and due process, emphasizing the importance of dialogue over confrontation as the path forward.
