The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has made a provocative appeal to voters, urging them to accept any money or goods offered by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in an attempt to buy votes, describing such offerings as “stolen money being returned.”
Speaking to voters in the Adombrobe community in Akuapem South on Monday during the start of a five-day campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Asiedu Nketia accused the NPP of hoarding large sums of illicitly acquired funds in their homes. He claimed that the ruling party members are unable to deposit these funds in banks or transfer them abroad for fear of being caught.
Asiedu Nketia alleged that the NPP plans to distribute this money in a bid to secure votes in the upcoming elections but urged voters to take the money and still vote against the party.
“They have hoarded lots of stolen money in their houses because if they send it to the bank or try to take it outside, they will be exposed. So they are hoarding it in their homes. They will come to share the looted money in an attempt to buy your votes to stay in power,” Asiedu Nketia stated.
He further encouraged voters to view the money or goods offered as their own stolen funds being partially returned by the thieves. “Collect and chop any money they bring to you—it is your own money they have stolen. So whether it comes in cash or kind, be it cloth, Maggi cubes, or chicken, take it with the mindset that it is your own stolen money being returned. The deity that you invoke will rather punish the person while you walk free,” he continued.
Asiedu Nketia argued that the NPP can only be held accountable for the high levels of corruption in the country if there is a change in government. He also addressed the poor state of roads in the Adombrobe community, blaming the current government for halting construction projects initiated by the NDC in 2016. He assured residents that if elected, the NDC would resume work on these roads and address other pressing needs in the community.
He called on the residents of Akuapem South to support the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, Lawrence Adwoa Djiwornu, in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the need to break the NPP’s long-standing dominance in the constituency.
Residents of Adombrobe expressed frustration with the ruling NPP government, accusing it of neglecting the community by failing to construct roads and address other social needs. They assured the NDC of their support in the December 7 election.
