The Presiding Member (PM) of the Asokwa Municipal Assembly, Nana Yaw Wiredu, has condemned the violent actions of some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) footsoldiers in the Ashanti Region.
He revealed that an Assembly Member for Atonsu-Agogo South, Raymond Opoku Agyemang, was physically assaulted on January 8, 2025, while attempting to mediate a dispute at the Astro Turf facility managed by the Assembly.
In a press release issued on January 9, Nana Yaw Wiredu described the attack as shocking and unacceptable, urging the police to swiftly investigate and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
According to the statement, a group of NDC footsoldiers, allegedly led by an individual identified as Issachar, stormed the Astro Turf on the day of the incident, demanding that a football club using the pitch vacate the premises.
Despite attempts by the team manager to de-escalate the situation, the footsoldiers refused to back down.
When informed of the situation, Raymond Opoku Agyemang arrived at the scene to intervene. He explained that the football club in question had the approval of the Municipal Assembly to use the facility. However, during the discussions, one of the footsoldiers reportedly slapped him, sparking a violent confrontation.
Mr. Wiredu expressed his displeasure with the conduct of the NDC footsoldiers, calling on the Asokwa Police to investigate the incident thoroughly and impose appropriate sanctions on those involved.
“I urge the NDC Regional Chairman and the Asokwa NDC Constituency Chairman to immediately call their members to order. Acts of intimidation and violence will not be tolerated by the Assembly Members in Asokwa,” he stated.
He also noted that the Assembly has adhered to directives revoking the appointments of government appointees, emphasizing that this should have facilitated a smooth transition rather than acts of hostility.
The Asokwa Presiding member assured Assembly Members of their safety, pledging that the Assembly, in collaboration with security agencies, will work to prevent such incidents in the future.
He encouraged them to remain calm as steps are taken to appoint a new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and other government appointees in an orderly manner.
“We will ensure that all processes leading to the appointment of a new MCE and other government appointees are conducted peacefully,” he concluded.
The incident has drawn significant attention, with calls for an end to politically motivated violence in the region. Ghanaians are urging all stakeholders to prioritize peace and cooperation during the transition process.
