A leading member of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Awal Mohammed, has jumped to the defense of Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, following widespread criticism of his recent conduct within the party.
In a Facebook post that has since generated intense debate on social media, Awal accused sections of the NPP of applying double standards in their reactions to internal disagreements, arguing that Abronye’s actions are being unfairly exaggerated compared to previous outbursts by other senior members of the party.
“When Hon. Kennedy Agyapong was insulting everyone in this country — including calling all NPP members ‘stupid’ — he was still an NPP MP for Assin Central. Yet people hailed him as bold and truthful,” Awal wrote.
According to Awal, during the party’s 2023 presidential primaries, Kennedy Agyapong made inflammatory statements against the then sitting President Nana Akufo Addo and Dr. Bawumia, including his now-famous “mɛ yɛ mo showdown” remark.
He also alleged that Kennedy Agyapong publicly attacked several sitting Members of Parliament during his campaign tours.
“He went to many constituencies and attacked MPs like Hawa Koomson, Alex Tetteh, and Henry Quartey — most of whom later lost their primaries,” Awal stated. “Today, those same people call those acts bravery and truthfulness. But when Abronye speaks, everyone suddenly wants him silenced.”
Awal’s post was a direct response to recent calls from within the NPP for disciplinary action against Abronye DC, Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party after former Minister of Roads and Highways Dr. Richard Anane reportedly accused him of disrespecting former President John Agyekum Kufuor during a closed-door meeting — a claim the party’s Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Butey has since denied with clear explanation that they was unseriou misconduct.
Awal argued that Abronye’s record within the NPP speaks for itself, citing his years of service in various leadership positions.
“He’s a regional chairman who worked tirelessly to bring the party to power.
He’s served as youth organiser, vice-chairman, and now chairman — all through hard work,” Awal wrote.
He also dismissed claims that Abronye was sidelined from the Bawumia campaign, explaining that while the Bono Regional Chairman was not formally named as part of the national campaign team, he campaigned for the Vice President in his home region out of personal conviction.
“Abronye only followed Dr. Bawumia to campaign in Bono. He has that choice, just like any party member,” Awal clarified.
“His Ohia TV platform discusses national and party matters — it’s not a campaign tool for anyone.”
The Bawumia campaign aide further hinted that Abronye’s Ohia TV media platform would play a major role in the NPP’s 2028 political communications strategy, describing it as “a critical voice within the party’s media ecosystem.”
Ending his post with the hashtag #LetsWatchIt, Awal Mohammed said those calling for Abronye to be silenced are acting out of political convenience.
“The apostles of ‘Let Ken be Ken’ are now calling for the gagging of Abronye.
Let Abronye be Abronye,” he concluded.
Background
The debate over internal discipline within the NPP has reignited following a reported altercation between Abronye and senior party figures.
While some party elders view his public remarks as disrespectful, his defenders including Awal Mohammed insist he is being targeted for expressing candid opinions that challenge established authority within the party.
