Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Awentami Paul Afoko, has expressed profound grief over the tragic helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region that claimed the lives of several high-ranking government officials and military officers.
The accident, which occurred Wednesday 6th August 2025, killed Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Dr. Samuel Sarpong National Vice Chairman of NDC and other senior figures, including Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna depurty National security Coordinator.
Eight people in total were confirmed dead and burnt be young recognition.
In a statement issued Friday, Afoko described the loss as “deeply saddening” and recalled his personal relationships with the deceased officials.
“I knew Dr. Omane Boamah and considered him a friend. I knew Alhaji Murtala and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna. They were brothers to me because of the depth of our relationship,” he said.
Afoko extended his condolences to President John Mahama, the government, and the bereaved families, paying special tribute to the Ghana Armed Forces for what he called the loss of “gallant officers who died in the saddle obeying the call to duty.”
Among the victims was Afoko’s nephew, Squadron Leader Peter Anala, a Ghana Air Force officer.
“We mourn them and will not forget their sacrifice,” Afoko said, adding that the nation had lost patriots who paid the ultimate price in service to Ghana.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
