Dr. Samuel Ayeh, a member of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has submitted a petition to the GMA requesting that Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Effiduase and also a GMA member, be summoned before its disciplinary committee.
The petition, filed by Dr. Samuel Ayeh, cites Afriyie’s recent comments supporting illegal mining activities, known as “galamsay,” made during a public event on September 28, 2024.
According to Dr. Ayeh, Ayew Afriyie who is a member of the association remarks contradict the GMA’s earlier condemnation of such practices, which pose significant health risks and environmental hazards.
Dr. Ayeh argues that Afriyie’s statements have tarnished the reputation of the GMA and could mislead the public regarding the association’s stance on illegal mining.
The petition calls for appropriate sanctions, including potential suspension, to uphold ethical standards within the medical community and reaffirm the GMA’s commitment to environmental protection and public health.
Dr. Ayeh stated in the statement “I am therefore invoking the executive council’s power under article 24 od the association’s constitution for the council to summon him before the disciplinary committee for questions and apply appropriate sanctions which may include suspension from the association as provided for by the constitution”.
Again, Dr. Ayeh believed this will send the strongest of signals about the association’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining.
Also, he believes this will send a clear signal to all members of the association the need to maintain high ethical standards befitting of medical practitioners in Ghana, Dr. Ayeh noted.
