President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to restoring lasting peace in the embattled town of Bawku, located in the Upper East region.
This comes after recent violence resulted in civilian and police casualties, as well as property destruction.
Speaking at the Ghana Military Academy’s Graduation Parade, President Mahama condemned the violence but expressed confidence in the mediation process led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
He emphasized that the Ghana Armed Forces are working to maintain peace nationwide, with Bawku being a major flashpoint.
“The Ghana Armed Forces is engage in several theaters to maintain peace and security in our nation, one major flashpoints continue to be the Bawku area, only two days ago, an incident in the market place triggered an unfortunate loss of lifes and criminal vandalism of property”
“I wish to emphasize that nobody gains from this situation of conflict and insecurity,” he remarked.
He highlighted the progress made through the Otumfuo mediation process, which recently brought together all stakeholders in Kumasi to discuss a roadmap towards peace.
He emphasized “We’ve triggered the Otumfuo mediation process, which saw all stakeholders participate in discussions in Kumasi on a roadmap towards peace”.
He noted that the Otumfuo mediation process, which involves all stakeholders, will resume next week upon the Asantehene’s return from abroad.
“I am assured by the Asantehene that the process will resume next week when he returns from his brief visit Abroad”, the President said.
