Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on former President John Dramani Mahama to refrain from making disrespectful remarks about respected figures in Ghana.
Addressing party supporters at a rally in Amasaman in the Greater Accra region, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence in his ability to defeat Mahama in the upcoming December 7th presidential election, but he voiced concerns about the tone of Mahama’s campaign.
Dr. Bawumia accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer of resorting to insults during his campaign, despite having presented the party’s manifesto to the public.
He suggested that Mahama’s actions were a sign of frustration, as his campaign was reportedly not gaining traction in key areas.
“The 2024 election is clearly a contest between myself and former President Mahama for the presidency,” Bawumia said. “From the way his campaign is going, I am confident he has realized it is not working, and he is heading towards a miserable defeat. That’s why he reacts with anger at the slightest provocation.”
Allegations of Insults
Dr. Bawumia claimed that Mahama had been verbally attacking key figures in Ghana, including members of the clergy, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations, by labeling them as hypocrites.
“I have heard that the former President is now insulting clergy, traditional leaders, Imams, and civil society organizations, calling them hypocrites. Is that how a former president should speak?” Bawumia asked, urging supporters to reflect on whether they had ever heard such statements from a previous head of state.
Bawumia also referenced Mahama’s recent criticisms of the Electoral Commission (EC) and claims that the NPP government was a “foolish” one. In response, Bawumia said, “Even if this government is foolish, it has outperformed the one he [Mahama] oversaw.”
Call for Respect in Campaigns
Bawumia urged the NDC’s flagbearer Mr. Mahama to be more respectful in his campaign communication, particularly at rallies, and to give due regard to the respected figures and institutions of the country. He emphasized that decency and respect should be maintained in the political discourse, especially as the nation prepares for a crucial election.
