The Bolgatanga Traditional Council has appealed to Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, to take swift action in resolving a protracted chieftaincy dispute that has left the regional capital without a substantive chief for years.
During a meeting on Tuesday, the Council, led by its acting President, Naba Patrick Asaliya III, Chief of Yarikabisi, congratulated the newly appointed minister on his role but emphasized the urgent need to address the chieftaincy vacuum.
Naba Asaliya III expressed concerns over the dispute, which remains unresolved in court, warning that it poses a threat to governance and development efforts in the area.
The Council also called for greater collaboration with the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council to address land disputes and other pressing issues requiring traditional authority intervention.
In response, Akamugri acknowledged the widespread impact of unresolved chieftaincy conflicts across the Upper East Region, describing Bolgatanga’s situation as critical.
He emphasized the need for dialogue and legal processes to restore peace and stability.
The Minister also noted that President John Mahama’s upcoming visit to the region would offer an opportunity to brief him on the matter and seek executive intervention. He assured the Council of his dedication to working closely with all stakeholders, promising to “work tirelessly” towards a resolution.
