The Bono Region recorded approximately 900 cases of tuberculosis (TB) in 2024, with 40 deaths reported, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
Emmanuel Obeng Hinneh, the HIV/TB Coordinator at the Bono Regional Health Directorate, disclosed this in an interview with Wenchi-based Radio West Africa on Tuesday morning.
The disclosure follows recent national statistics indicating that Ghana recorded a total of 20,599 TB cases last year. Mr. Hinneh also revealed that in the first two months of 2025 alone, the Bono Region has already recorded about 160 TB cases.
He emphasized the long history of TB, noting that the disease has affected humans for centuries. A significant milestone in TB research occurred on March 24, 1882, when Dr. Robert Koch identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria responsible for the disease.
This discovery paved the way for advancements in TB diagnostics and treatment, leading to the establishment of World TB Day, observed annually on March 24.
The theme for World TB Day 2025, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” underscores the need for sustained commitment, increased funding, and effective prevention and control strategies worldwide.
Mr. Hinneh reiterated the importance of collective efforts in the fight against TB and called on all stakeholders to strengthen diagnosis and treatment services in Ghana. He urged the public to seek early diagnosis and adhere to prescribed treatment regimens to curb the spread of the disease.
