BREAKING: Court rules Nii Latse II be added to records of National House of Chiefs as Ga Mantse
Share on WhatsApp

The Court of Appeal in Kumasi has upheld a High Court decision ordering the National House of Chiefs to reinstate Nii Tackie Adama Latse II into the National Register of Chiefs as the Ga Mantse.

The appellate court’s decision brings an end to a long-standing legal battle that began in 2021, when Nii Latse II was expunged from the National Register by the National House of Chiefs. The move prompted legal action that culminated in a High Court ruling in his favor, directing the House to re-enter his name as the legitimate Ga Mantse.

Despite this ruling, the decision was challenged in the Court of Appeal by the National House of Chiefs and another party, resulting in an injunction that temporarily halted the reinstatement.

However, in a unanimous 3-0 decision, the Court of Appeal dismissed the challenge and reaffirmed the High Court’s ruling, ordering that Nii Tackie Adama Latse II’s name be re-entered in the register within 14 days.

Additionally, the court imposed fines on the National House of Chiefs and the other plaintiff, ordering them to pay GH₵30,000 and GH₵20,000 respectively in legal costs.

Speaking to the media following the judgment, the lawyer for Nii Latse II said the court’s decision was a long-awaited vindication. “We initiated legal action after the National House of Chiefs removed Nii Tackie Adama Latse II from the National Register. This ruling confirms his legitimacy and mandates his reinstatement as Ga Mantse,” the lawyer stated.

The ruling marks a significant milestone in the Ga chieftaincy dispute, potentially paving the way for greater clarity and resolution in the traditional leadership of the Ga State.
