In the wake of a devastating fire that ravaged parts of the Adum Railway Market in Kumasi, Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has pledged to spearhead the market’s reconstruction and has donated GH¢300,000 to support affected traders.
The Abetifi member of Parliament made the announcement during a visit to the market to sympathize with victims of the blaze, which destroyed numerous shops and goods worth thousands of cedis.
The donation, he said, was intended to provide immediate relief to the traders and help them begin rebuilding their lives.
“I see myself as one of you. As traders, when disaster strikes, it is up to us to support each other,” Acheampong told the market community.
“This GH¢300,000 donation is just the start. I am also committed to fully financing the reconstruction of the market to ensure your livelihoods are restored.”
The MP underscored the urgency of the reconstruction and said he was ready to mobilize resources and expertise to begin rebuilding once formal consultations were complete.
However, he noted that the process must first receive the endorsement of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is currently out of the country.
“We are awaiting Otumfuo’s return to begin formal consultations. I will also be engaging the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and market authorities to assess the scope of the project and determine the best path forward,” he said.
Highlighting his capacity to deliver, Acheampong pointed to his track record in private development. “I’ve built the largest hotel in Africa so believe me when I say, I can rebuild this market,” he added confidently.
His promise was met with gratitude from market leaders and traders, who hailed the gesture as timely and compassionate.
The proposed reconstruction is expected to commence after all necessary stakeholder consultations and approvals are completed.
