CARE Ghana calls for rejection and nationwide protest against provisional voter’s register

Care for Free and Fair Elections Ghana (CARE Ghana) has issued a strong call to the public, urging a nationwide rejection and protest against the current provisional voter’s register, which the group claims is fraught with significant flaws that jeopardize the integrity of the upcoming December 7, 2024, elections.

In a statement released today, CARE Ghana expressed deep concerns over what it describes as a compromised voter’s register, riddled with duplicated entries, errors, and omissions. The organization argues that these issues not only undermine the credibility of the register but also pose a serious threat to the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.

“The provisional voter’s register in its current state cannot guarantee the credibility of the December 7 elections,” CARE Ghana stated. “We cannot allow this deeply compromised document to determine the future of our nation.”

The group highlighted that the widespread duplication of voter entries could potentially enable electoral fraud, a concern that strikes at the heart of Ghana’s democratic process. CARE Ghana further alleged that these flaws may not be accidental but could be the result of deliberate manipulation by certain political interests aiming to subvert the electoral process.

“The integrity of our electoral process is being compromised, not by accident, but by design,” the statement continued. “The Electoral Commission (EC) is constitutionally mandated to deliver an accurate and transparent voter’s register, but the current state of the provisional register suggests a complete failure in fulfilling this duty.”

CARE Ghana warned that if these issues are not addressed, the consequences could be dire, potentially leading to widespread unrest during the elections. The group emphasized that it is the responsibility of every Ghanaian to stand against what it sees as a clear and present danger to the nation’s democracy.

In a rallying call to action, CARE Ghana urged all citizens, civil society organizations, and political parties to join in peaceful protests to demand immediate rectification of the issues within the provisional register.

“Our democracy is at stake, and we must act now to protect it,” the organization declared. “The voice of the people is powerful, and together we can ensure that our elections are free, fair, and credible.”

As the December 7 elections approach, the call from CARE Ghana is likely to intensify the scrutiny on the Electoral Commission and the processes leading up to one of the most critical elections in the country’s recent history.
