The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has suspended its nationwide strike action following the release of funds by the government to settle key outstanding payments owed to its members.
In a press statement issued Monday and signed by National President Maxwell Bunu and National Secretary Fidelis Kamaayi, the association announced that the industrial action, which began on Nov. 24, 2025, has been called off with immediate effect.
The decision comes after the government facilitated payments covering the All-Year-Round Work Compensation for additional duties performed in 2022, arrears of the 2023/2024 Book and Research Allowance, and the 2022 Research Top-Up Allowance for Akrokerri College of Education.
CETAG described the release of funds as a significant step toward resolving the concerns that prompted the strike and commended the government for addressing the financial obligations.
However, the association noted that two issues remain unresolved and are currently before the National Labour Commission (NLC) for adjudication. These include outstanding Book and Research Allowance arrears for the 2022/2023 academic year, which CETAG insists should be paid on a pro rata basis, and concerns over the downgrading of experienced teaching staff with master’s degrees in the Colleges of Education.
According to the association, the downgrading undermines professional dignity and contravenes agreed conditions of service as well as provisions of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
While suspending the strike in good faith, CETAG urged the NLC to expedite its consideration of the outstanding matters to ensure a comprehensive and lasting resolution.
The leadership also assured affected members that the issue of staff downgrading remains a top priority and will be pursued to its logical conclusion.
CETAG has directed all members across the Colleges of Education to resume academic duties and return to lecture halls effective Monday, Feb. 16, 2026.
The association expressed gratitude to its members for their solidarity and patience during the strike and thanked students, parents and other stakeholders for their understanding throughout the period of industrial action.
CETAG reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue and engagement in the interest of strengthening teacher education in Ghana.
