Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reportedly convinced a key figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to defect to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during a campaign tour in the Ejisu Constituency on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
While touring the area, Chairman Wontumi encountered Hannah Sarpong, the Akyeremade Ward Women’s Organizer for the NDC.
Ms. Sarpong was reportedly tasked by the NDC’s National Organizer, Joseph Yamin, to mobilize women for an upcoming party event.
However, after a discussion with Chairman Wontumi, in which he highlighted the achievements of the NPP government, especially the Free SHS program that she had benefited from, Ms. Sarpong decided to abandon her assignment.
In a video that has since gone viral, Ms. Sarpong is seen removing her NDC-branded attire and replacing it with NPP paraphernalia, symbolizing her shift in loyalty in the NPP’s Ejisu Constituency office.
She then embraced Chairman Wontumi, signaling her satisfaction with joining the NPP.
However, in a response, NDC National Organizer Joseph Yamin dismissed the reports as false. Speaking to www.kumasimail.com, Yamin refuted the claim, stating, “I am the National Organizer, I deal with regional and constituency executives. How can I come and assign a ward women’s organizer to perform a task for me? Wontumi has lost his relevance in the NPP campaign, so he’s now faking news to renew his popularity.”
Yamin further claimed that Chairman Wontumi is currently campaigning independently, while others, aggrieved regional executives, including COKA are campaign with NAPA because of the division in their front under his bad leadership style, in a bid to replace him Wontumi after the elections.
He added, “Anywhere NAPO goes, he tells people that COKA is the next Chairman of the NPP for the Ashanti region. This shows how divided the NPP is in the Ashanti region. The NDC is focused on our campaign in the Ashanti region, devoid of staged drama for self-glorification—an old tactic,” he mocked.
