The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has strongly criticized what he terms as deliberate attacks against former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Addressing the press on Thursday, November 21, Chairman Wontumi alleged that the insults were orchestrated by individuals aligned with former President John Mahama, with the aim of tarnishing Mr. Kufuor’s legacy. He expressed concern over recent criticisms, including remarks from Dela Edem, an aide to Mr. Mahama, and Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change (MFC).
Mr. Kyerematen recently accused Mr. Kufuor of partisanship for endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, a statement that Wontumi described as a betrayal of trust.
Defending Kufuor’s Legacy
“Kufuor’s achievements are evident for all Ghanaians to see. What has he done to deserve such unwarranted insults? It is disappointing to see individuals allegedly sponsored to undermine his reputation. As a nation, we must reject the politics of insults and focus on values that unite us,” Wontumi said.
He expressed particular disappointment with Alan Kyerematen, pointing out that Mr. Kufuor had entrusted him with key responsibilities in the past, including serving as an ambassador and as Trade Minister.
Wontumi also questioned whether Mr. Mahama might be supporting the formation of a new political movement, potentially to split votes ahead of the December elections.
Call for Unity
Reiterating his support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Chairman Wontumi urged Ghanaians to rally behind the NPP candidate, describing him as a unifying and civil leader who avoids divisive politics.
“Dr. Bawumia embodies the qualities Ghana needs for progress—unity and civility. He does not engage in insults or sow seeds of discord. I encourage all Ghanaians to vote massively on December 7 for a leader who prioritizes national development over divisive rhetoric,” Wontumi said.
He concluded by calling on Ghanaians to reject political tactics that promote division and instead support leaders who uphold unity and respect for others.
