The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to offer a public apology to President John Dramani Mahama over past comments he made against him.
Chairman Wontumi, while President Mahama was in opposition, repeatedly subjected him to verbal attacks and made claims that were widely described as unsubstantiated and politically motivated.
However, following what has been described as sober reflection, the NPP regional chairman, who is also a hopeful for the party’s national chairmanship position, is said to have acknowledged his mistakes and decided to apologise to the President and his immediate family.
The planned apology was disclosed by Oheneba Nana Asiedu, host of a political talk show on Wontumi TV, during an interview with Bright Kankam Boadu on the BKB Show in Kumasi.
Oheneba Nana Asiedu said Chairman Wontumi assumed office as Ashanti Regional Chairman at a relatively young age and, like many others, made mistakes along the way.
“Chairman Wontumi was in his 30s when he became the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP. He was young, he made some mistakes, and he also did some things right. I can tell you that Chairman Wontumi has learnt his lessons. He is preparing and will soon render a public apology to President Mahama,” he said.
No official date has yet been announced for the apology.
