The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering women in the cocoa sector as it joins the global celebration of International Women’s Day 2025 under the theme “Accelerate Action.”
Women play a crucial role in Ghana’s cocoa industry, contributing to farming, research, quality assurance, marketing, and processing. However, many still face challenges such as limited access to land, financial support, and extension services. In response, COCOBOD has rolled out strategic initiatives to address these barriers and promote gender inclusivity.
As part of its empowerment efforts, COCOBOD provides capacity-building programs on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), financial literacy, and business management to equip women with essential skills. The board also ensures access to farm inputs, supports women-led cocoa processing and chocolate production, and promotes climate-smart agricultural techniques for sustainable farming.
To recognize outstanding female farmers, COCOBOD annually presents the Most Enterprising Female Cocoa Farmer Award at national, regional, and district levels. Awardees receive cash prizes, mini-trucks, farming equipment, training opportunities, and international exposure to best practices in cocoa production.
On this International Women’s Day, COCOBOD is calling on government agencies, development partners, private sector stakeholders, and civil society organizations to collaborate in closing the gender gap within the cocoa industry. The board emphasizes that fostering inclusivity will ensure long-term sustainability and economic prosperity.
“Women are the backbone of Ghana’s cocoa industry, and their empowerment is key to the sector’s success. COCOBOD remains committed to creating an enabling environment where women can thrive, innovate, and lead,“ the board’s Public Affairs Department stated.
COCOBOD’s initiatives align with global efforts to advance gender equality, ensuring that women in the cocoa sector receive the recognition and support they deserve.
