GHANAIAN-French musician Maddy Maznaz will never forget the day her label, Bentley Records, asked her to send a verse for a collaboration with legendary US rapper Snoop Dogg. Never!
And can anyone blame her for greeting the news with loud screams, jubilation, and excitement? Snoop Dogg, an icon, is featuring on her upcoming album, Say No To Bullies.
Maddy Maznaz, real name is Magdalene Narh Combarieu, who is still reeling in the euphoria, described working with Snoop Dogg as both thrilling and creatively challenging in an interview with Graphic Showbiz on Friday, December 12.
“I received an email from my record label, Bentley Records NYC, to send my verse for a collaboration with Snoop Dogg, and I was lost for words.”
“It seems they want to kill me, and I’m not ready for that kind of silent kill or pressure. How can they tell me to send a verse to collaborate with Snoop Dogg? On a Jazz, rap, and hip-hop track! What? I just couldn’t believe it!”
“I started working on it immediately, even though I was overwhelmed with anxiety and the pressure to do it well and right. I wanted to impress God, myself, Bentley Records, and Snoop Dogg. Locked alone in my room, I began writing and recording my verse.”
“At that time, I had just relocated to Monrovia, Liberia, with my family after my single Oojemi Aloo? was featured on Bentley Records’ Prestige Album alongside American music royalty including Lil Wayne and Rick Ross. So, imagine the pressure to do another song with Snoop Dogg in a brand new country.”
“I started searching within myself for inspiration. Being in that space was a deep discovery and a disconnect from the world. I had to shut everything out to pour out the piece. This was, and still is, one of the greatest positive challenges I have ever experienced in my life and music career,” she disclosed.
Sharing her musical journey, Maddy revealed some of the milestones she has achieved that keep her motivated. “I feel very empowered looking at my music releases and the features I’ve been honoured to be part of. My song, Light Of The World, was featured on Bentley Records’ Legends Chronicles, a celebrity compilation album. I shared the space with acts such as Future, The Game, Bow Wow, and others on that album.
Maddy, who is very outspoken, admits that speaking her mind has made her a stronger artist.
“My outspoken or controversial character hasn’t hurt my career in any way that I know of. In fact, my fans and people appreciate my candid, undiluted opinions and perspectives on life and how I approach issues. Being authentic has also propelled my artistry and creativity. It’s impossible to go wrong with that or not be loved for being original,” she observed.
Regarding industry support, she pointed out that hard work and determination are crucial.
“The industry is a business entity. The only way to survive is through hard work, determination, resilience, and working smart. These are key if one wants to thrive,” she explained.
While some musicians think otherwise, Maddy said social media has been instrumental in her musical career. “Social media has been a valuable tool in building my music career, especially in reaching out to fans and connecting with new people around the world.”
