The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to elect Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, describing the move as a recycling of a failed candidate with no new ideas to offer Ghanaians.
In a statement signed by its National Communications Director, Osei Kofi Acquah, the CPP said the outcome of the NPP presidential primaries was not surprising, arguing that Dr. Bawumia had emerged once again as what it described as the establishment’s preferred candidate.
The CPP congratulated the NPP for adopting the strategy of electing its flagbearer early but claimed that the approach was first introduced into Ghana’s political history by the CPP.
The party said it expected the NPP to acknowledge this precedent.
According to the CPP, the results of the primaries confirmed earlier indications from what it termed “sponsored prophecies and polls,” which, it claimed, pointed to Dr. Bawumia’s selection as far back as 2023.
The party accused the former Vice President of presiding over an administration marked by corruption allegations against government appointees, environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, and economic mismanagement.
In the statement, the CPP cited the pollution of water bodies and the destruction of forest reserves through galamsey activities, the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), rising inflation, and the collapse of several Ghanaian banks as evidence that a Bawumia-led ticket offered “nothing new” to the country.
The CPP also criticised employment-related programmes under the previous government, including the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), which it described as unsustainable, and accused the economic team led by Dr. Bawumia of failing to prevent job losses.
The party further argued that claims previously made by Dr. Bawumia about the strength of Ghana’s economic fundamentals were later contradicted by economic developments during the period.
“We are cautioning Ghanaians not to expect anything novel or patriotic from the same recycled presidential candidate,” the statement said, adding that Dr. Bawumia had been elected to lead what it described as a “disunited and incompetent” NPP.
The NPP has not responded to the CPP’s statement as of the time of publication.
