Kwaku Kwarteng, the Member of Parliament for Obuasi West and a senior figure in Kennedy Agyapong’s camp, has thrown his weight behind the aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, urging delegates to back him as the leader with the “courage and madness” needed to shatter Ghana’s entrenched political norms.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Kwarteng lambasted the current political class for delivering “suboptimal” leadership that has plunged the country into repeated economic crises, including 19 IMF bailouts when combined with the structural adjustment program era.
He argued that Ghana requires bold reforms to break the cycle of borrowing, contract kickbacks, and deepening poverty.
“The political leadership we have provided Ghanaians as politicians has been suboptimal,” Kwarteng stated.
“I want to see real reforms happen. I want to see people who can disrupt the status quo; the status quo of borrowing, awarding contracts, taking kickbacks, and then leaving a country getting poorer and poorer.”
He highlighted the plight of university graduates flooding into a jobless market, questioning: “The youth are churning out of our universities. What work are they going to do?”
Kwarteng positioned Agyapong as the antidote, praising his character despite acknowledged flaws.
“We need the kind of leadership that has the courage and I dare say the madness to confront the status quo and give this country a chance of a better future,” he declared.
“That’s the reason I’m supporting Kennedy Agyapong. He has his faults, all of us do but there is a character in him that Ghana needs now, until we get that kind of ruthless leadership willing to disrupt the unhelpful status quo that has sent a proud country like Ghana to the IMF 19 times,” he emphasized.
