The Accra High Court has placed an injunction on the funeral arrangements of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, following a petition by his maternal family.
The injunction, granted against the family head (Abusuapanyin), Kofi Owusu, restrains him from proceeding with the burial until the substantive case is determined.
The court also directed Transitions Funeral Home not to release the musician’s body during the period of the injunction.
In its ruling, the court noted that affidavits before it suggested that the immediate family had been excluded from key funeral preparations.
Although the judge acknowledged that the delay could result in additional costs, the court stressed that proper consultation and adherence to due process were essential.
While affirming the traditional authority of the family head to lead funeral arrangements, the court made clear that such authority must be exercised in collaboration with close relatives of the deceased.
The court further instructed Kofi Owusu to convene a stakeholder meeting within three weeks to agree on a new burial date.
Additionally, all funds raised toward the funeral must be kept separate from accounts of the Daddy Lumba Memorial Foundation.
The applicants were also ordered to file an affidavit with the court registrar.
The case stems from disputes that arose after Daddy Lumba’s passing on July 26, 2025, at age 60.
Tensions between his maternal family and the family head over control of funeral arrangements and financial management escalated, reflecting long-standing Akan customs that give significant authority to the maternal lineage in burial matters.
