The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has congratulated John Dramani Mahama following what the party describes as the passage of a United Nations resolution recognising the transatlantic slave trade and the enslavement of Africans as a grave crime against humanity.
In a statement signed by its National Communications Director, Osei Kofi Acquah, the party praised the president for what it called a bold and historic step aimed at drawing global attention to the treatment of Africans during the transatlantic slave trade.
The CPP said the decision by the United Nations represents a major milestone in the pursuit of justice for Africans and people of African descent around the world. It described the development as a moment of pride, particularly for the party which was founded on the principles of Pan-Africanism and social justice.
According to the statement, the party believes the recognition by the UN affirms long-standing calls for justice for Africans who were forcefully taken from their homeland and subjected to slavery and racial discrimination across different parts of the world.
The CPP also linked the development to the ideals of its founder, Kwame Nkrumah, noting that the principles of unity among people of African descent and the pursuit of equality remain central to the party’s political philosophy.
The statement further pledged the party’s full support to the initiative being championed by President Mahama, saying the move represents a historic moment in the global fight against racism and injustice.
