Students at Assin Nsuta Agricultural Senior High School are forced to drink from a stagnant water source shared with pigs and goats, after the Member of Parliament for Assin South Constituency, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, allegedly stopped an NGO from completing a borehole project for the school.
The NGO had initiated the project after witnessing the school’s deplorable water source, but the MP ordered the school authorities to cease the construction, leaving the 90% completed project to waste. According to reports, a local farmer had drilled the water source for irrigating his rice farm.
Students who spoke to local reporter Yaw Boagyan, shared their experiences with the water, citing skin rashes and health concerns from using the stagnant water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and washing.
Community members condemned the MP’s actions, expressing disappointment and concern for the students’ health. They urged the MP to allow the NGO to complete the borehole project.
The NDC Parliamentary candidate for Assin South Constituency, Stephen Kofi Baidoo, also criticized the MP’s actions, stating that the development of the constituency should not be politicized.
He claimed to have brought the NGO to construct the borehole but was thwarted by the MP’s intervention. All attempts to reach the MP for comment were unsuccessful.
