An early voter intention survey conducted by Africa Sanity has revealed emerging demographic divides among delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of its hotly contested presidential primaries.
The findings, which cover data collected between April and June 2025, suggest that while the race remains wide open, two leading contenders Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB) and businessman Kennedy Agyapong (Ken) are drawing support from sharply contrasting voter blocs.
According to the Africa Sanity survey, DMB holds a lead among Muslim delegates, adult males particularly those aged 40 to 55 and party members in full-time employment.
Analysts suggest this support base reflects a preference for continuity and experience among older and more economically secure delegates.
In contrast, Agyapong is emerging as the candidate of choice among Christian delegates, women, younger voters under 40, students, the unemployed, and self-employed groups such as artisans, traders, farmers, and market women.
These groups are widely considered the grassroots backbone of the party and represent a younger, more aspirational demographic.
Observers say Agyapong’s appeal may be driven by calls for change and a populist leadership style.
Former National Security Coordinator Bryan Acheampong trails consistently in third place, with limited but steady support across most demographic categories.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum shows a modest advantage among older and Christian delegates—likely influenced by his religious background and technocratic profile.
The research team emphasized that the findings reflect a snapshot in time and may shift as the campaigns gain momentum. Factors such as official campaign launches, endorsements, regional tours, and political events are expected to play a significant role in reshaping delegate preferences.
Future phases of the study are expected to include other influential groups such as former appointees and past party executives in the expanded delegate register.
These additions are anticipated to offer a more comprehensive view of the evolving electoral landscape within the NPP.
With the party’s 2025 primaries serving as a key indicator of its direction ahead of the 2028 general elections, the survey provides critical baseline data for stakeholders seeking to understand and influence internal party dynamics.
