Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emerged as the overwhelming frontrunner in the Ashanti Region ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, according to a new internal survey conducted by the party’s constituency research officers.
The survey, carried out by the Ashanti Regional NPP Constituency Research and Elections Officers, indicates that Dr. Bawumia commands 71.8 percent support among certified party delegates across the region.
The findings are based on inputs from 34 out of the 47 constituencies in the Ashanti Region.
Dr. Bawumia’s closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, polled 11 percent, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong followed with 4 percent. Dr. Yaw Adutwum secured 1 percent, and Ing. Kwabena Agyapong recorded no measurable support in the survey.
About 9 percent of delegates remain undecided, with 2 percent reported as unavailable due to travel and another 2 percent categorised as deceased, resigned, or suspended.
Methodology
The research was conducted between January 3 and January 14, 2026, using face-to-face engagements with certified delegates listed in the official party voting register across all 47 constituencies in the region.
According to the researchers, the exercise followed extensive campaign tours by four of the aspirants or their representatives, including visits by the wife of Mr. Agyapong and Hon. Naa Torshie.
Although Dr. Bawumia did not personally tour the region during the period, his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, undertook a region-wide engagement.
The survey reports a 99 percent confidence level with a margin of error of 1.1 percent.
Regional and Zonal Trends
Dr. Bawumia recorded commanding leads in all ten operational zones of the Ashanti Region, including Kumasi, Atwima, Asante Akim, Afigya Kwabre, Nsuta-Mampong, Sekyere-Kumawu, Adansi, Amansie, and Ahafo Ano.
In several constituencies—such as Manhyia South, Old Tafo–Pankrono, Juaben, Effiduase-Asokore, Sekyere Afram Plains, and parts of Nsuta-Mampong—Dr. Bawumia polled above 80 percent, underscoring what the researchers describe as “deep and consistent grassroots support.”
Even in constituencies with relatively higher levels of undecided delegates, Dr. Bawumia maintained clear leads over his rivals.
Report and Signatories
The survey report is the product of months of engagement by constituency research teams, including electoral area coordinators who interacted directly with delegates at polling station and community levels.
The full report, according to the officers, includes constituency-by-constituency breakdowns, zonal analyses, and infographics to aid interpretation.
The findings were jointly signed by Ernest Frimpong Manso (Dean, Afigya Sekyere East), Salormey Asiedu (Secretary, Ahafo Ano South West), and Dominic Danquah (Spokesperson, Ejisu), on behalf of the Ashanti NPP Constituency Research Officers.
While party officials are yet to officially comment on the survey, the results reinforce Ashanti Region’s reputation as a stronghold for Dr. Bawumia and position him as the clear favourite ahead of the NPP’s crucial presidential primaries.
