The Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Team of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has set an ambitious target of recording zero safety incidents in the first quarter of 2026, following a review of recurring accidents, near misses and fatalities within the company’s operations.
The renewed commitment was announced at the First Quarter 2026 Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Meeting held at ECG’s Boadi Office.

The meeting brought together Regional Engineers, Regional Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) representatives, the Sub-Transmission General Manager and Technical Managers from the four operational regions in Ashanti.
The meeting focused on strengthening safety compliance across all ECG operations, with participants agreeing that safety must remain central to every aspect of the company’s work.

Presenting national safety statistics, the Manager for Safety at ECG Head Office, Ing. Pearl Essel, who joined the meeting virtually, revealed that the company recorded 44 electrical incidents nationwide in 2025.
These included 16 staff-related incidents and 28 involving non-staff.
She further disclosed that 20 fatalities were recorded across the country during the period, comprising one staff fatality and 19 non-staff fatalities.

The incidents resulted in compensation payments totalling GH₵1,269,765.
Focusing on the Ashanti operational area, Ing. Essel reported that the combined Ashanti regions recorded four non-staff fatalities in 2025, with no staff fatalities. Two of the fatalities occurred in Ashanti East, while Ashanti Sub-Transmission and Ashanti West each recorded one. The victims were contractor personnel and members of the general public.

Following detailed regional safety presentations and an analysis of incident trends, participants unanimously resolved to tighten enforcement of safety standards at all levels.
The measures will apply to ECG staff, third-party contractors and members of the public who interact with the company’s infrastructure.
Key resolutions from the meeting include intensified safety training, stricter enforcement of safety regulations and the deployment of Regional Safety Officers to districts to educate staff directly.
The team also agreed to enhance safety supervision and training for contractors.
To improve operational control, the meeting resolved that all isolation requests must be approved through Regional Engineers, while permits to work will be issued exclusively by designated Controllers.
The Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Team emphasized that no task is too urgent to be carried out safely, reaffirming its commitment to fostering a strong safety culture built on vigilance, accountability and the protection of human life.
