The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commissioned a new 33kV sub-transmission feeder to enhance electricity supply reliability in Obuasi and nearby communities.
The facility, which was officially energized at 8:34 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2025, draws capacity from GRIDCo’s recently upgraded 50/66MVA transformer.
ECG says the development will provide a more stable and efficient power supply for homes, businesses, and industries in the enclave.
The commissioning marks the culmination of 49 days of work involving ECG engineers and contractors.
During the period, a standby technical team was stationed between Kumasi and Obuasi to sustain operations and respond promptly to any faults while installations by both ECG and GRIDCo were underway.
With the new system in place, ECG has decommissioned its 11kV cables, connecting instead to GRIDCo’s cable gantry and its own 33kV GIS panels at the Obuasi Substation.
Officials say this transition ensures the region is better positioned to meet growing electricity demand.
The project involved collaboration between ECG’s Ashanti Sub-Transmission and Ashanti South teams, GRIDCo, and contractors, who worked under difficult conditions, including heavy rains, to complete the installation.
