The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has trained 23 technicians and engineers in the Ashanti Sub-Transmission Region in infrared thermography as part of efforts to strengthen preventive maintenance and reduce equipment-related power outages.
The two-day refresher training, held in Kumasi from August 20 to 21, 2026, equipped technical staff with skills to identify abnormal heat, commonly known as “hotspots,” on critical electrical infrastructure before they develop into major faults.
Infrared thermography uses thermal imaging cameras to detect unusual temperature patterns in equipment such as substations, pylons, cables and switchgear. Early identification of these abnormalities enables maintenance teams to take corrective action before equipment failure occurs.
The training combined classroom sessions with practical field exercises. It was opened by the Acting General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Christopher Anafo, and facilitated by Ing. Randy Delanyo Adjorlolo of ECG Head Office in Accra.
Ing. Adjorlolo described the programme as an important step towards strengthening ECG’s preventive maintenance practices.
“This training is a proactive step towards strengthening ECG’s preventive maintenance culture,” he said.
Ing. Edem Evans Agra, Substation and Switchgear Maintenance Manager, said the adoption of infrared thermography would enable the region to identify potential faults early and undertake timely repairs.
He said early detection of hotspots would help reduce unexpected equipment failures, minimise power interruptions and extend the operational lifespan of critical electrical assets.
“It is about protecting our network and serving customers better,” he said.
Briefing the media, Head of Public Relations for Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Collins Manu, said the training complements ECG’s broader network improvement initiatives.
He explained that while the company continues to invest in network upgrades, the Ashanti Sub-Transmission Region is also taking proactive measures to identify and address potential faults before they affect customers.
The initiative forms part of ECG’s broader strategy to improve operational efficiency, strengthen preventive maintenance and enhance the reliability of electricity supply across the Ashanti Region.
The refresher training equip the technical staff to help identify hidden faults before they become potential failures, thus minimizing or mitigating unplanned outages.
The staff were selected from the various Sub-transmission technical sections: Protection & Control, Network Maintenance, Substation & Switchgear Maintenance, and Control Operations.
