The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the sub-region’s sole candidate for the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) when West Africa’s turn in the rotational leadership cycle arrives in 2027.
The endorsement was announced on Friday during the Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers held in Abuja, Nigeria.
In an official recommendation titled C/REC.1/12/25, the ministers urged all ECOWAS Member States to adopt a common position in support of Ghana’s candidacy.
According to the resolution, the Council considered Ghana an important and longstanding contributor to ECOWAS and to regional and international diplomacy, noting that backing President Mahama’s bid would help strengthen the region’s representation within the African Union.
The ministers emphasized the need for ECOWAS to increase its presence in international organizations and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting qualified candidates from the region for continental and global leadership roles.
The recommendation calls on the Authority of Heads of State and Government—the highest decision-making body of ECOWAS to formally adopt the declaration of support when it convenes on Sunday.
If approved, President Mahama will become West Africa’s official nominee for AU Chairperson in 2027, positioning Ghana to assume the continental leadership role for the first time in decades.
The document was signed in Abuja by H.E. Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, Chair of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers.
