In a show of humility and engagement, the Minister of Education-designate, Haruna Iddrisu, reached out to the Executive Director of the Africa Education Watch ( Eduwatch) earlier today to announce his nomination and seek their support for his tenure.
This gesture has been widely praised by Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Eduwatch, who expressed his admiration for the nominee’s proactive approach.
In a public statement on Facebook, Mr. Asare congratulated Hon. Haruna Iddrisu on his nomination, describing him as a seasoned development advocate and former student leader.
Although the two have never met in person, Kofi Asare acknowledged the nominee’s influence and extensive political experience, having served as a minister in previous administrations.
“I congratulated him for his nomination and welcomed him to the hot seat,” Mr. Asare wrote. Reflecting on the ministry’s challenges, he likened the nominee’s potential to that of the late Hon. Baah Wiredu, who is remembered as one of the best leaders to head the Ministry of Education.
Challenges Ahead for the Education Sector
The executive director of Africa Education watch Kofi Asare used the opportunity to highlight the critical skills required for success at the Ministry of Education, emphasizing the need for strong managerial, organizational, and advocacy skills.
These qualities, he noted, are essential for managing resources, implementing policies, and advocating for increased investment in education.
In addition, Mr. Asare outlined the significant challenges facing the education sector, particularly in Ghana’s most deprived regions.
These include the Northern, Oti, and Western North Regions, which are grappling with over 4,000 schools under trees, more than 1 million pupils without adequate desks, severe teacher deficits, and high numbers of out-of-school children.
Eduwatch has pledged its full support for addressing these challenges, with a focus on building an education system that is accountable, equitable, and efficient.
Haruna Iddrisu: A Historic Nomination
If approved, Haruna Iddrisu will become the first Minister of Education from the Northern part of Ghana in the Fourth Republic, a milestone that has sparked positive reactions on social media. Many commentators have celebrated the nominee’s humility, leadership skills, and commitment to public service.
Kofi Asare noted the importance of bridging the generational north-south divide in education access and quality, adding that Eduwatch will continue to demand accountability for the implementation of policies, including the 140 promises outlined in the NDC’s education manifesto.
Eduwatch’s Commitment to Education Reform
Eduwatch, with support from the British Government, has launched a new project called Manifesto Promise to Policy Transition (M2P) to assist the government in translating campaign promises into actionable policies. Mr. Asare expressed optimism that this initiative will contribute to meaningful reforms under the leadership of Hon. Haruna Iddrisu.
As the nation awaits Parliament’s approval of the nominee, many Ghanaians have expressed hope that his tenure will bring transformative change to Ghana’s education system.
