The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana has congratulated Sammy Gyamfi on his recent appointment as the Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).

In a press statement issued on January 17, 2025, the association described Mr. Gyamfi’s appointment as a “significant milestone” and expressed optimism that his leadership would foster positive developments in Ghana’s mining sector.

The association recalled its engagement with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the party’s 2024 campaign, where the Campaign Committee on Mining held discussions with key stakeholders in the small-scale mining sector. The group noted that the NDC’s campaign manifesto outlined policies that aligned with the interests of small-scale miners, fostering hope for reforms and support for the sector.

“With Mr. Gyamfi’s appointment as Acting MD of PMMC, we are confident that he will collaborate effectively with stakeholders to promote the collective interests of the small-scale mining sector,” the statement said.

The group emphasized the importance of Mr. Gyamfi prioritizing sustainable mining practices, ensuring transparency, and fostering cooperation to improve the sector and contribute to national development.

Appeal for Technocratic Leadership

In addition to celebrating Mr. Gyamfi’s appointment, the association urged former President John Dramani Mahama to consider appointing a technocrat with extensive technical expertise as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.

According to the association, addressing critical issues such as water pollution and environmental degradation in the small-scale mining sector requires leaders with both technical knowledge and practical experience.

“We strongly believe that appointing experts to oversee this critical sector will ensure sustainable development, safeguard the environment, and bolster the nation’s economic growth,” the statement added.

Call for Cooperation

The association expressed its readiness to work with the new PMMC leadership and other relevant authorities to promote the collective interests of the country’s mining sector.

The statement was signed by Michael Kwadwo Peprah, President of the National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana.

Press Statement
National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana Congratulates Sammy Gyamfi on Appointment as Acting MD of PMMC
For Immediate Release
Date: January 17, 2025

The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Sammy Gyamfi on his appointment as the Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).

This appointment marks a significant milestone, and we are optimistic that his leadership will contribute meaningfully to the advancement of Ghana’s mining sector.
During the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s campaign activities, the party’s Campaign Committee on Mining engaged us, the key stakeholders in the small-scale mining sector.

The party’s campaign manifesto clearly outlined policies that addressed our concerns and represented our interests.
We were inspired by their commitment and endorsed the NDC’s message with the hope that the mining sector would receive the attention and restructuring it needs under their governance. With Mr. Gyamfi’s appointment as Acting MD of PMMC, we are confident that he will collaborate effectively with stakeholders to promote the collective interests of the small-scale mining sector.

We believe that his leadership will prioritize sustainable practices, transparency, and mutual cooperation for the betterment of Ghana’s mining industry and the nation as a whole. While celebrating this appointment, we also appeal to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to consider appointing a technocrat with extensive technical expertise and experience as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. The current challenges in the small-scale mining sector, particularly issues related to water pollution and environmental degradation, require leaders who are equipped with both knowledge and practical solutions to address these pressing concerns.

We, the small-scale miners, strongly believe that appointing experts to oversee this critical sector will ensure sustainable development, safeguard the environment, and bolster the nation’s economic growth. Once again, we congratulate Mr. Sammy Gyamfi and look forward to working together in the collective interest of Ghana’s mining sector.
