Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has warned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could face a more devastating defeat in the 2028 general elections if the party’s leadership fails to address internal issues and reconcile with disenchanted members.
Speaking on Accra-based Peace FM, in an interview monitored by Kumasi Mail, Boakye Agyarko stressed the need for introspection and reform within the party.
“Education can deceive you into thinking that all educated people are knowledgeable,” he said proverbially.
“There’s a time for everything,” he added. “But judging by where the party stands now, if we don’t change our attitudes and policies, the 2028 election loss will be worse than the one we just experienced” he warned.
He urged the current leadership of the NPP to reach out to members who have withdrawn their commitment to the party, stressing the importance of unity ahead of the next elections.
“Out of anger, some of our members have withdrawn their services to the party. We must look for them and bring them back. If we fail to do that, we will regret going into the 2028 election,” he reiterated.
The former energy minister appealed to party members and officials to manage their anger and forgive one another, noting that many had been disillusioned due to how the party treated the members, including MPs, who were sidelined in governance.
“We’ve all endured difficult times in the party. It became obvious that party people didn’t matter in the government’s decisions. No advice was taken. But the damage has already been done, so there’s no need to revisit those issues. The embarrassment is evident, and we can’t enumerate all the factors that led to our defeat,” he said.
“What matters now,” Agyarko concluded, “is learning from our mistakes especially our disconnect with the electorate, party members, and sympathizers and reorganizing to come back stronger.”
