A Lamborghini Urus believed to be linked to proceeds of crime has been seized from the residence of Ghanaian musician Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, following a joint operation between the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the United States Justice Department.
The vehicle, a 2019 model, was recovered during a lawful search conducted at a home in Trassaco Valley Phase 1 in Accra.
The operation was initiated based on a 2023 request from the U.S. agencies and executed by EOCO’s Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU).
The car is reportedly tied to financial crimes committed by Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving a 86-month sentence in the United States.
According to EOCO, Shatta Wale cooperated with authorities and voluntarily surrendered the car. The search and seizure were described as professional and incident-free.
Per the release, the artist expressed concern over the public nature of the seizure, stating it could damage his brand image if supporters witnessed the luxury car being taken away in EOCO’s custody. Officers allowed him to hand over the vehicle personally.
The seizure forms part of efforts by U.S. authorities to retrieve $4.74 million in restitution owed by Amuah.
The FBI and the U.S. Justice Department plan to issue a formal Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request to the Government of Ghana for the car’s return to the United States.
Shatta Wale and a former senior officer of the National Signal Bureau (NSB) have both been named as persons of interest in the ongoing investigation. They are expected to assist EOCO in the coming days.
EOCO said it may share its final investigation report with U.S. authorities in line with ongoing cooperation efforts.
