Chairman of Ghana’s National Media Commission (NMC), Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, has raised alarms over the impact of fake news on the nation’s democratic process.
During a recent address, at Media Forum For election 2024 organized by the Ashanti regional National Media Commission Ashanti Adversary Committee in collaboration with the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo emphasized the pressing need for responsible journalism and urged the media to strengthen efforts against the spread of misinformation, which he argues undermines democratic principles and public trust.
The former managing editor of the daily Graphic outlined concerns that fake news, especially during election periods, could distort public perception and compromise the integrity of Ghana’s electoral process.
He noted that misinformation campaigns, often circulated on social media platforms and by unauthorized news outlets, create confusion and influence voter decisions with false narratives.
The chairman emphasized that such misleading information has the potential to erode confidence in the Electoral Commission and other national institutions.
“Our democracy depends on the free flow of credible information, and we, as a nation, cannot afford to let fake news control the narrative,” Ayeboafo said. He urged both media professionals and the public to be vigilant in identifying and combating misinformation.
He also appealed to journalists and media houses to adhere strictly to ethical standards, reminding them of the critical role they play in shaping informed citizenship.
The NMC Chairman further indicated that the NMC would be collaborating with stakeholders, including civil society organizations and international partners, to implement measures that address fake news through education and stricter regulatory oversight. He stressed the importance of an independent media that remains accountable, highlighting that trust in media is vital to sustaining a resilient democratic society.
He call for unity in tackling the issue: “It’s a collective responsibility. Journalists, media owners, government officials, and citizens must work together to preserve our democratic values.”
The veteran journalist remarks come amid rising global concerns over the influence of fake news on political stability and public trust. With Ghana preparing for upcoming elections, the NMC chairman’s warning serves as a timely reminder of the media’s role in safeguarding democracy through truth and accuracy.
