Farmers sound alarm on Astroturf menace

The Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana (CFAG) has raised a red flag over the proliferation of Astroturf across the country, citing devastating environmental, health, and community impacts.

In a statement signed by the Farmer General secretary, Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu, the association expressed deep concern about the unchecked installation of artificial turf, which they say contributes to climate change, poses serious health risks, and compromises the well-being of future generations.

“Astroturf absorbs and retains heat, exacerbating urban heat islands and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses,” the statement read.

“The production and disposal of artificial turf products rely on non-renewable resources and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.” The farmers also highlighted hygiene concerns, citing skin irritation, burns, and long-term health issues associated with Astroturf.

They further expressed worry about the intergenerational impact, saying that prioritizing Astroturf over natural grass and sustainable alternatives compromises the health, well-being, and environmental stewardship of future generations.

CFAG urged policymakers, local authorities, and stakeholders to reassess the installation of Astroturf nationwide and shift towards eco-friendly, sustainable solutions that prioritize public health, environmental protection, and community well-being.

The association invited fellow farmers, concerned citizens, and organizations to join the fight against Astroturf, saying, “Together, we can create a better future for our nation and ensure a healthy, thriving environment for generations to come.”

Another political gimmick. Is it because the government has developed these n7mber of fields for our youth that these “concerned” groups are mushrooming ti pour water on the good job done? Why don’t they concern themselves about the galamsay which is the main cause of our land degradation?
