Pep Guardiola has expressed his strong desire for Phil Foden to remain at Manchester City for the entirety of his career, highlighting the midfielder’s potential to become a future club captain.
Speaking to the media during his pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday night’s Premier League visit to Fulham, Guardiola emphasized Foden’s importance to the team and his long-term influence at the club.
“Hopefully he can stay all his career here,” Guardiola said. “He’s a special player, a Man City fan from the Academy, there are no doubts on that.”
When asked about Foden’s prospects of taking on a leadership role, Guardiola was clear that such a position depends on the player’s own ambitions and behavior.
“If he wants to become one, yeah,” the manager stated.
“But captains come from themselves and their behaviour on and off the pitch. It depends on him.”
Guardiola praised Foden’s leadership qualities, noting that while the midfielder may not be vocal in the dressing room, his presence on the pitch speaks volumes.
“On the pitch he’s always been like that. He’s not a guy to talk much in the dressing room but on the pitch, he never hides behind the scenes or what’s going on. He always took responsibility from day one, he has an incredible presence on the pitch.”
Foden’s recent performance against Leeds United was a testament to his growing influence. His two goals in Manchester City’s 3-2 victory brought his season tally to six goals across all competitions. Guardiola believes Foden’s ability to find scoring opportunities could see him approach a 20-goal mark for the campaign, further aiding City’s ambitions.
