A group of about 20 heavily armed men, led by Richard Jakpa, director of special operations at the National Security Secretariat, stormed the private residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, the former governor of the Bank of Ghana, in the early hours of Wednesday.
The raid occurred at approximately 5:00 a.m. at Dr. Addison’s home in Roman Ridge, Accra, where he and his family were present. The armed men, some wearing balaclavas and wielding AK-47 rifles, reportedly disabled the property’s CCTV system before demanding access to alleged “vaults” within the house.

According to sources close to the former governor, Dr. Addison calmly informed the security personnel that no such vaults or cash reserves were on the premises. However, the team proceeded to ransack the house in search of valuables. No significant cash holdings were found, but the raiders seized the household’s CCTV monitor and control unit before leaving.
As part of the operation, the security team also confiscated Dr. Addison’s Toyota Lexus and Mercedes-Benz vehicles, driving them to an undisclosed location.
A retired senior official of the Bank of Ghana, reacting to the incident, described it as unprecedented: “This is the first time in Ghana’s history that such an incident has occurred involving a former central bank governor. It is both alarming and troubling.“

This marks at least the second high-profile raid of its kind under President John Mahama’s administration. In February 2025, Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s longest-serving finance minister, was also subjected to a similar operation, when his Labone residence in Accra was raided by over 15 armed men led by Jakpa.

Sources close to the Addison family report that they are deeply shaken by the incident. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the reason for the raid or the whereabouts of the confiscated items.
