The Ga Traditional Council has ordered the exhumation of the body of legendary highlife musician Daddy Lumba from his residence at East Legon, citing a breach of Ga customs and burial traditions.
The directive follows a meeting held on Thursday at the office of the Gborbu Wulomo, where Ga traditional leaders had expected to meet the family head of the late musician, Kofi Owusu.
However, after several hours of waiting, the Abusuapanin failed to appear for the scheduled engagement, a development that reportedly angered the traditional authorities.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Jesse Ankrah said the actions of the family head had violated Ga laws, customs, and traditions regarding burial practices.
According to him, under Ga-Adangbe cultural traditions, burials are only permitted in designated community cemeteries, and individuals are not allowed to bury the dead outside those specified areas.
He explained that exceptions to this rule could only occur under extraordinary circumstances and must be accompanied by specific traditional rites and consultations with the relevant authorities.
Rev. Ankrah further indicated that because the family head failed to honour the invitation from the traditional leaders, the council may proceed to the late musician’s residence in East Legon to exhume the body so that the appropriate traditional rites can be performed.
He added that the traditional leaders would reconvene to determine the next course of action to ensure that the required customs and purification rites are carried out.
The Ga Traditional Council has yet to officially announce when the exhumation exercise may take place.
