The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the completion of arrangements for the promotion of qualified teachers from the Deputy Director rank to the higher grades of Director II and Director I, removing previous limitations that restricted advancement.
In a statement issued on January 28, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, GES said the long-awaited promotions would soon commence following the submission of a final report by a multi-agency committee.
The committee, made up of representatives from the Ghana Education Service, the Public Services Commission, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, has completed its work and submitted recommendations to GES management.
GES noted that extensive consultations were carried out with key stakeholders, including teacher unions, whose inputs were incorporated into the final framework for the promotions.
According to the statement, management expects the first call for applications and the administration of aptitude tests for promotion to the Director II and Director I ranks to be announced by the end of the first quarter of the year.
In a major policy shift, GES announced that promotions to the Director II and Director I levels will no longer be dependent on the availability of limited office vacancies, a practice that previously hindered career progression. The move, GES explained, is in line with a commitment made by President John Dramani Mahama to teachers.
GES assured teachers that further details and guidelines on the promotion process will be communicated in due course through official GES channels only.
The announcement is expected to bring relief to many teachers who have remained on the Deputy Director rank for years due to structural bottlenecks in the promotion system.
