Dr. Ishmael Yamson, Chairman of the National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee, has raised concerns over Ghana’s heavy reliance on food imports and the country’s deep-seated political corruption, which he believes are hindering economic progress.
Speaking at the 2025 National Economic Dialogue, Dr. Yamson stated that Ghana remains the most food-import-dependent country in Sub-Saharan Africa, a situation he described as alarming given the nation’s agricultural potential.
“Ghana is the only country in Sub-Saharan Africa that depends most on food imports to feed its people,” he noted, emphasizing the need for urgent policy interventions to boost local food production and reduce the burden on the national economy.
Dr. Yamson also criticized the country’s political culture, asserting that Ghana is currently characterized by a mindset of looting state resources for personal gain rather than focusing on national development.
“Today, Ghana is characterized by a political mindset to loot state coffers for personal gains,” he stated, lamenting that corruption has become institutionalized, slowing economic transformation and undermining governance.
He urged policymakers to adopt stringent measures to curb corruption and invest in sectors that drive sustainable economic growth, particularly agriculture and industrialization.
