The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has expressed concern over challenges in implementing the vehicle importation tax waiver promised to medical doctors and dentists as part of their Conditions of Service.
In a statement signed by GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour and General Secretary Dr. Richard Selormey, the association revealed that the waiver, which was agreed upon with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance in March 2024 and commenced in July 2024, has faced delays due to a change in government.
The statement noted that the processing of waivers has been halted, with some applications still awaiting final approval from the Ministry of Finance.
This situation has resulted in vehicles being stuck at the port, accumulating high demurrage charges and facing the risk of confiscation and auction.
GMA executives have been engaging with key stakeholders, including the Ministers of Health and Finance, to resolve the delays and restore the waiver.
In the meantime, they have advised members who have applied for the waiver to exercise restraint while efforts are being made to address the issue.
Additionally, the association urged members with the financial capacity to consider clearing their vehicles to avoid accumulating extra port charges.
Those planning to import vehicles using the waiver were also advised to put their plans on hold until further notice.
The GMA assured its members that it remains committed to ensuring the full implementation of the vehicle importation tax waiver, which is part of their signed Conditions of Service.
