Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has declared that President John Dramani Mahama is gearing up to spearhead an unprecedented crackdown on illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.
Addressing members of the media, Ablakwa emphasized the administration’s unwavering commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities that continue to threaten the nation’s environment and future.
“I can confirm to you that you are going to see a fight that has never been witnessed in this country,” Ablakwa stated. “President Mahama is going to lead a very ruthless and relentless campaign against galamsey. He has not minced words at all.”
This strong message follows a cabinet meeting held earlier in the day, during which President Mahama reportedly outlined his determination to tackle the issue head-on.
According to Ablakwa, there was no ambiguity in the president’s resolve as he issued a call to action for all involved agencies.
“There was no ambiguity that he will be leading a war that we have never seen to deal with this canker, this existential threat once and for all,” the minister added.
The campaign, according to government officials, will mark a new phase in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to preserve its natural resources and safeguard the well-being of communities affected by illegal mining operations, following the deaths of eight service officials, including the Minister for Defence and the Minister for Environment.
